Overview

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture. For ten days, 11–20 September 2026, thousands of places open their doors completely free — historic buildings, hidden spaces normally closed or ticketed, guided walks, talks and family-friendly events. The National Trust runs it, but most participating sites are independent places not usually open to the public — which is the real draw.

Don't leave it until September. Many popular sites release their limited free places over the summer and they book up fast — people report big-name venues already fully booked months ahead.

How to Claim

1. Click the link on this page to open the official festival site.
2. Search for events near you (filter by location and date).
3. On each listing, tap the booking button in the blue box — it tells you whether you need to pre-book or can just turn up, or shows the date booking opens.
4. Reserve the popular sites as early as you can.
