Overview
Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture. For ten days, 11–20 September 2026, thousands of places open their doors completely free — historic buildings, hidden spaces normally closed or ticketed, guided walks, talks and family-friendly events. The National Trust runs it, but most participating sites are independent places not usually open to the public — which is the real draw.
Don't leave it until September. Many popular sites release their limited free places over the summer and they book up fast — people report big-name venues already fully booked months ahead.

Tips
- Book early — free places for sought-after sites (e.g. Bletchley Park, Tyntesfield and Dyrham near Bristol) go quickly.

- Filter by date as well as distance — many sites only open on specific days within the window.
